Billy Gruner - collective monochrome 14 August 2008

Billy Gruner’s recent paintings and installations are made with a certain punk aesthetic in mind; for instance, the materials used are often commonplace, the paint application is deliberately rudimentary and, performative. In previous works for example household electrical tape was applied on top of wet enamel for durability. This kind of aesthetic relates to a more complex relationship or prior history of art making - where similar forms and approaches have been used. Gruner has made these and other types of object-like paintings and monochromatic works since 1998. Most recently an exhibition of similar works titled ’Green Music’ was held at Room 103 in Auckland, SNO Sydney, and NOT in Brisbane. Gruner presents what he calls a post-formalist methodology via works designed to be experienced within a fresh discourse. In the ’New Works for an Insolvent System’ series, painted artist panels again allude to a simplicity and directness the artist aspires to - coming after post modernism proper.
